Promontory fort – coastal, Corporation Lands, Co. Wicklow

On the Wicklow coast, somewhere along the stretch of land historically known as Corporation Lands, a headland was once deliberately cut off from the mainland and turned into a fortified enclosure.

That is what a coastal promontory fort is: a piece of high ground projecting into the sea, defended on its landward side by one or more earthen banks and ditches, with the cliffs or water doing the defensive work on the remaining sides. It is an economy of effort that Iron Age communities understood well, and examples of the type are scattered along Ireland's coastline wherever the geology obliges.

Beyond its classification and location, very little specific detail about this particular site is currently available in the public record. What can be said with confidence is that promontory forts of this kind were generally constructed during the Iron Age, though some remained in use or were adapted across later periods. The name Corporation Lands points to a parcel of ground historically managed or owned by a municipal body, most likely associated with a nearby town, which adds a small layer of administrative history to a much older landscape feature. The fort itself would predate any such arrangement by well over a thousand years.
