Megalithic tomb – portal tomb, Cloghroe, Lettermore, Co. Donegal

About six kilometres north of Ballybofey, on the northern slope of the Cloghroe River valley, stands a weathered portal tomb that has watched over the Donegal landscape for millennia.

From this elevated position, the monument commands sweeping views eastward along the Deele valley, with Liskeran Hill visible to the south across the gentle river valley below. The surrounding landscape is a patchwork of pasture fields and recently planted woodland on the wetter, lower ground.

This ancient burial chamber has lost its capstone somewhere in the centuries, leaving the structure open to the elements. The tomb’s entrance faces north-northwest, marked by two impressive portal stones that still stand sentinel despite the passage of time. The eastern portal stone has fallen against its western companion; if it were upright, it would reach 2.3 metres in height, whilst the western stone rises an imposing 2.5 metres. At the southern end of the chamber, a gabled backstone stands 1.3 metres high, with a single sidestone leaning against its eastern edge. Within the chamber itself lies a displaced stone, partially buried beneath field stones that have accumulated over the years.

The monument’s long history includes a fascinating discovery made during agricultural work in 1843. Whilst labouring the ground around the tomb, workers unearthed a small earthen urn at a depth of about 60 centimetres, containing calcined bones and ashes; unfortunately, both the vessel and its contents crumbled to dust upon exposure to air. When antiquarian Thomas Fagan visited in 1846, he found the monument in much the same condition as it appears today, suggesting this portal tomb has remained largely unchanged for at least the past 175 years, continuing its silent vigil over the Cloghroe valley.
