Holy well, Letterbrickaun, Co. Galway

Near the bridge at Leenaun, a holy well has effectively ceased to exist twice: once through the accumulated weight of local legend, and again beneath a new road.

Known correctly as Tobar Muire, meaning Well of Mary, it once sat on the side of a trackway in a field to the north-east of the village, one of countless such wells across Ireland that served as focal points for communal devotion.

The well's active life centred on the 15th of August, the feast of the Assumption and a date associated across much of rural Ireland with pattern days, local gatherings that combined religious observance with a fair or festivity. Tobar Muire drew people annually until, according to local tradition, Travellers washed clothes in the water and the well "seized up". This kind of explanatory folk memory is not unusual around holy wells; the waters of such sites were widely understood to be conditional, capable of withdrawing or souring if misused or treated without proper reverence. Whether the well dried up naturally around the same time or simply fell out of use, the tradition fixed the blame and the story hardened. By the time the site was being recorded, it was already blocked and entirely obscured by vegetation. A subsequent road development then removed what little remained above ground, leaving no visible trace of it.
