It’s interesting to note Blackrock Castle, one of Cork’s most popular historical landmarks is technically not a castle, but is in fact a castellated fortification. The current building once was site of a fort built by Queen Elizabeth at the request of the citizens of Cork who sought protection from pirates and other invaders.
The castle once served as a beacon for passing shipping traffic, using light from a turf fire.
In 1722 the old four storey tower of the castle was destroyed by fire and rebuilt by the citizens at a cost of £296.
The castle was destroyed again by fire in 1827 and rebuilt in 1829.
