In the gently rolling pastures of Stoneville House demesne in County Limerick stands a mysterious ivy-clad tower, its circular limestone walls rising to two storeys despite centuries of weathering.

This late-medieval structure, measuring about 9 metres in diameter, offers a fascinating glimpse into Ireland’s defensive past, though its northeast side has sadly collapsed into rubble. Built from uncoursed limestone rubble with a characteristic base batter, the tower appears to have been refitted during the 18th or 19th century, possibly transforming it from a defensive structure into a romantic demesne feature.
The tower’s interior reveals its complex history through architectural details that span centuries. A solid ground floor gives way to upper chambers accessed via mural stairs on the northwest side, though these have lost their side walls and roof. The first floor once housed a square room measuring 4.54 metres east to west, complete with window embrasures in the southeast and southwest corners, tall recesses with pointed arches in the centre of the eastern and western walls, and a stone seat ledge along the southern wall. The second floor chamber, also square in plan, features similar window embrasures and a lintelled wall press in the centre of the west wall, though ivy now obscures much of the upper walls.
The tower’s historical context remains intriguingly uncertain; according to the antiquarian Westropp, writing in 1906-7, these remains might be either Ardgowlebegg or Cloghtrida Castle, names that echo in the nearby townlands of Ardgoulbeg and Cloghatrida. Just 9.5 metres from the tower stands a walled garden whose western wall incorporates two sections of older masonry, likely associated with the tower itself. These sections, built of the same uncoursed limestone rubble but lacking the base batter, stand noticeably higher and thicker than the rest of the garden wall at 4.5 metres high and 0.9 metres wide, compared to the later wall’s 3 metres height and 0.7 metres width.
