The structure’s strategic position on high ground would have provided its inhabitants with clear sightlines in every direction, making it an ideal location for monitoring approaches and potential threats during more turbulent times in Ireland’s history.

Archaeological evidence suggests this tower house was once part of a larger fortified complex. To the west of the main tower, aerial photography captured by Cambridge University in 1967 reveals what appears to be the outline of a levelled bawn; a type of defensive wall that typically enclosed a courtyard area around Irish tower houses. These bawns served as protective enclosures where livestock could be secured and where additional buildings for daily life might have stood.

Physical remnants of this defensive perimeter can still be observed today, with a section of the bawn wall return visible on the southwest face of the tower house itself. This surviving masonry connection point shows where the protective walls once joined the main structure, offering visitors a tangible link to how these fortifications were constructed and integrated. Such architectural details help piece together the defensive strategies employed by Irish landowners during the medieval and early modern periods, when tower houses dotted the landscape as symbols of both status and security.
