Bridges & Crossings
Ballylahan, in the east of County Mayo, is home to a bridge that carries enough historical weight to have earned a place in Ireland's record of protected monuments, yet the details of its story remain largely undigested by the public record.
What is known is that the crossing sits near the site of Ballylahan Castle, a medieval stronghold associated with the Burke family, who were among the most powerful Norman lords in Connacht. The river here is the Moy, and crossings of it have mattered for as long as people have moved through this part of the country.
