The graveyard, measuring 27.6 metres in internal diameter, is bounded by a substantial stone wall that varies between 1.3 and 1.5 metres wide, though time has reduced its height to between 10 and 65 centimetres. A 5-metre gap opens to the north, flanked on its western side by a stone slab set perpendicular to the wall’s curve. Within the enclosure, two altar structures occupy the southwestern sector whilst four small penitential cairns dot the northern half, accompanied by numerous unmarked grave stones that likely date from various periods of use.
The site forms part of a larger sacred landscape centred on St. Kieran. Just east of the graveyard, Toberkieran holy well continues to draw visitors, marked by a cross-inscribed stone slab on its southern edge. Though broken at the top, this slab bears a Latin cross with distinctive fish-tail terminals on its western face, a style often found in early Christian stonework. Close to the northeast of the burial ground, a natural rock formation known as St. Kieran’s Bed adds to the site’s religious significance, whilst 11.5 metres north stands a curious boulder featuring a carved rock basin; a shallow depression measuring 44 by 39 centimetres and 10 centimetres deep, possibly used for ritual purposes.
The burial ground appears on both the second and third editions of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, testament to its enduring importance in the local landscape. An old field wall extends northwest from the enclosure for about 15.5 metres, suggesting the site once formed part of a more extensive complex. Today, whilst surrounded by rough grazing land dotted with rock outcrops, the better quality agricultural land to the east hints at why this slightly marginal location may have been chosen for burial and worship, set apart from the everyday business of farming and settlement.
