made an intriguing discovery in the townland of Magheracar, County Donegal. Whilst excavating Trench no. 8 under licence no. 03E1017, they uncovered an isolated burnt spread; a type of archaeological feature that often indicates ancient cooking or industrial activity. The feature consisted of a charcoal-enriched sandy silt deposit measuring 5 metres in length and 0.4 metres in width, located about 3 metres from the southwest end of the trench.

Beneath this dark layer, the archaeologists found an oxidised deposit of burnt red material, suggesting intense heat had altered the soil. Both deposits lay approximately 0.6 metres below the original ground level, preserved beneath centuries of accumulated earth. Despite careful investigation along the northern edge of the feature, no artefacts were recovered that could help date the activity or identify its specific purpose. The absence of pottery fragments, tools, or other cultural materials means the burnt spread remains something of a mystery.

Following standard archaeological practice, Quinn’s team thoroughly recorded the feature before covering it with protective plastic sheeting. Whilst this particular burnt spread couldn’t be dated, similar features found across Ireland often date from the Bronze Age through to the medieval period. These enigmatic remains serve as subtle reminders that even seemingly empty fields in rural Donegal may conceal evidence of human activity stretching back thousands of years.
