On a platform overlooking the sea in Ballycharry, County Donegal, lies an intriguing archaeological site known locally as na reiligi, meaning 'the graves'.

Cairn, Ballycharry, Co. Donegal

This subcircular enclosure measures approximately 27.5 metres across from north to south and combines both natural and constructed boundaries. The northern edge is defined by a modern wall, whilst the western and eastern sides take advantage of natural drops in the landscape. The southern boundary features a curved stone wall standing one metre high, with a 2.2 metre wide entrance opening to the south-southwest.

At the heart of this enclosure sits an unclassified cairn, rising 1.2 metres in height and stretching 14 metres from east to west and 7.5 metres across. These stone monuments, typically built by carefully piling rocks into mounds, served various purposes throughout Irish prehistory; from marking burial sites to commemorating important locations or events. The local name na reiligi suggests this particular cairn may have served as a burial monument, though without excavation its exact purpose and date remain uncertain.

The site’s commanding position above the sea would have made it a prominent landmark in the landscape, visible to both land and sea travellers. Its combination of natural defensive features and constructed walls suggests careful planning by its builders, who clearly understood how to work with the natural topography. The Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, conducted in 1983, documented this site as part of a comprehensive effort to record the county’s field antiquities from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, ensuring these remnants of Ireland’s past are preserved in the historical record.
