Castle, Brittasdryland, Co. Kilkenny

In the townland of Brittasdryland in County Kilkenny, a circular earthen rampart marks the spot where a medieval castle once stood.

Castle, Brittasdryland, Co. Kilkenny

The site, now heavily overgrown with trees and scrub, measures approximately 60 metres in diameter and represents all that remains of what local historian Carrigan identified as Dreeling’s Castle in his 1905 work. According to Carrigan, the townland’s name itself derives from Brittas-Dreeling, reflecting the Dreeling family’s ownership of these lands until the 16th century.

Writing in the early 20th century, Carrigan noted that the castle had already vanished by his time, with only the large earthen rampart remaining in what was then James Hogan’s land in Brittas. His account remains the sole historical source documenting a castle at this specific location, making it a somewhat enigmatic piece of Kilkenny’s medieval landscape. The enclosure, catalogued as KK022-005002 in archaeological records, sits in the eastern portion of the townland.

Today, visitors to the site will find little more than the circular earthwork, its original defensive purpose now obscured by centuries of vegetation growth. While the Dreeling family and their castle have long since faded from living memory, this overgrown rampart continues to mark their former stronghold; a subtle reminder of the medieval families who once controlled these Irish lands before their power waned in the tumultuous 16th century.
