Built from roughly cut limestone, this structure appears on historical maps with varying fortunes; marked on the Down Survey and later recorded as ‘Castle (in Ruins)’ on the 1841 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. Today, only fragments of its former glory remain visible above ground.

The surviving architecture tells a story of medieval Irish fortification. The eastern gable wall stretches seven metres north to south, its 0.6-metre thickness typical of defensive construction from the period. A central fireplace in this wall hints at the domestic life once contained within these walls, whilst the partial southern wall, measuring just under five metres, features simple slit openings that would have served as both windows and defensive positions. These narrow apertures, known as opes, allowed defenders to observe and potentially fire upon approaching threats whilst remaining protected behind the castle’s thick limestone walls.

Perhaps most intriguing is the remnant of a bawn wall projecting southwards from the castle’s southwestern corner. This defensive wall would have originally enclosed a courtyard area, providing a secure space for livestock and offering an additional layer of protection for the castle’s inhabitants. The bawn, catalogued separately in archaeological records as LA029-048001, represents a common feature of Irish tower houses and castles, where the need for defence extended beyond the main structure itself. Though time and weather have reduced this once-proud fortification to ruins, these surviving elements continue to mark the Laois landscape as a place of historical significance.
