This site appears on both the 1840 and 1927 editions of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, marking it as a feature of historical significance that has captured cartographers’ attention for well over a century. The location offers commanding views across the surrounding countryside, a strategic advantage that would have been prized by its medieval builders.

The most intriguing architectural feature that survives is a substantial wall on the northern side of the site, measuring 4.5 metres from east to west, with a thickness of 1.25 metres and standing 1.5 metres high. This wall runs along the inner face of what appears to be a moated enclosure, suggesting this was once a fortified site of some importance. A recess on the wall’s northern side hints at something more significant; it may mark the location of an original gateway that would have controlled access to the site, or could potentially be the remains of a castle structure itself.

While much of the site’s history remains shrouded in mystery, its designation as a moated site speaks to its medieval origins, when such defensive earthworks were common features of Anglo-Norman settlements in Ireland. These moated sites typically date from the 13th to 15th centuries and were often associated with manorial centres or defensive outposts. The persistence of the name “Castle Miles” through centuries of mapping suggests that local memory has long associated this place with a more substantial fortification, even as the physical evidence has gradually disappeared into the landscape.
