Castle – motte, Athasselabbey North, Co. Tipperary South

In the pastures above the River Suir at Athasselabbey North in County Tipperary lies the remains of a medieval motte, one of two similar fortifications that once guarded this stretch of the river valley.

The monument sits approximately 40 metres from the riverbank, where the Suir flows in a roughly north-south direction. Though a modern tertiary road now cuts through its eastern section, the earthwork still retains much of its original defensive character; an oval enclosure measuring about 45 metres from north-northeast to south-southwest and 32.5 metres from east to west, including the intrusive roadway.

The fortification’s defences remain remarkably legible despite centuries of weathering and animal activity. A sheer scarp up to 5.3 metres high defines much of the perimeter, though badgers have disturbed portions of the western section. Inside this scarp, the subtle remains of a levelled bank can still be traced, whilst outside, a substantial U-shaped fosse or defensive ditch runs around much of the circuit. This ditch, measuring over 12 metres wide in places and still 1.1 metres deep, would have presented a formidable obstacle to any medieval attacker. Beyond the fosse, traces of an outer bank survive, best preserved along the southern and southwestern arcs where it stands 2.3 metres high on its inner face. At the northwest corner, this outer bank has been incorporated into a later field boundary, whilst the collapsed remains of a stone wall cross the ditch at this same point.

Today, the interior of the motte is largely overgrown with briars and nettles covering the western two thirds, whilst the truncated eastern sector is thick with undergrowth and trees. The eastern arc of the monument, visible on the far side of the road, is defined by a steep, uneven scarp that drops 5.1 metres, beyond which the land falls away naturally to the River Suir below. This strategic positioning, overlooking the river valley, mirrors that of another motte approximately 1.2 kilometres to the south, suggesting these fortifications once formed part of a coordinated defensive system controlling movement along this important waterway.
