The earthen mound rises approximately 4 to 6 metres high, with its flattened summit spanning roughly 20 to 25 metres across. Today, mixed woodland has claimed the structure, cloaking it in a natural camouflage that makes it easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Unlike many mottes of its era, this one lacks a visible fosse, the defensive ditch typically found encircling such fortifications. A later building has been constructed into the southwestern perimeter of the mound, showing how subsequent generations adapted and reused this strategic high ground. The motte’s positioning wasn’t arbitrary; it sits just 265 metres south of Culmullin parish church, suggesting the two structures may have formed part of a broader medieval settlement pattern in the area.

These earthwork castles were amongst the earliest fortifications built by the Anglo-Normans following their arrival in Ireland in the late 12th century. Mottes served as both military strongholds and symbols of authority, typically crowned with wooden palisades and towers that have long since vanished. What remains at Culmullin is the enduring earthen core, a monument that has weathered nearly nine centuries whilst the landscape around it has transformed from medieval frontier to peaceful countryside.
