Castle - motte, Milltown, Co. Kilkenny

This earthwork fortification, likely constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century, represents one of the most common types of castle built by the Anglo-Normans following their arrival in Ireland in 1169. The motte, a steep artificial mound that once supported a wooden tower or keep, still dominates the landscape, though centuries of erosion have softened its once formidable profile.

The castle’s strategic position wasn’t chosen by accident; it commanded views across the surrounding farmland and would have served as both a defensive stronghold and an administrative centre for the Norman lords who sought to control this part of Leinster. Like many motte and bailey castles throughout Ireland, this one was likely built quickly using local labour, with the motte constructed from earth dug from the surrounding ditch and the bailey, or enclosed courtyard, protected by a wooden palisade. These structures were meant to be temporary, serving as immediate fortifications whilst more permanent stone castles were planned and built elsewhere.

Today, visitors can still trace the outline of the bailey and climb the motte, though care should be taken on the sometimes slippery slopes. The site remains largely unexcavated, meaning much of its history lies literally beneath the surface. Local tradition suggests the castle may have been abandoned by the 14th century, possibly during the Gaelic resurgence when many Norman settlements in the area were reclaimed by Irish clans. Though no longer the imposing fortress it once was, this earthwork monument continues to mark the landscape as a reminder of the complex layers of conquest, settlement, and cultural exchange that shaped medieval Ireland.
