The site consists of a raised, circular platform measuring 48 metres north to south and 44 metres east to west, with a slightly dished grass surface at its centre. The defensive perimeter is marked by an earthen bank along the southern and northwestern sections, standing about 0.8 metres high on the interior and 0.9 metres on the exterior, with a base width of 10 metres. Where the bank ends, a more dramatic scarp takes over, particularly impressive on the northern side where it reaches 1.5 metres in height, and the southern edge where it towers at 3 metres.

The original entrance to this fortification can still be identified at the southeastern corner, where a 2.3 metre wide ramp provides access to the interior. While no visible fosse or defensive ditch remains today, the substantial earthworks would have provided formidable protection in medieval times. The site has seen some modern intrusions; structures now press against the base of the southeastern and southwestern scarps, whilst a field boundary wall runs along the southwestern to northeastern section. A straight road bank, running northwest to southeast, has also cut slightly into the scarp on the northeastern side.

This type of ringwork castle represents an important element of Anglo-Norman military architecture in Ireland, typically dating from the late 12th to early 13th centuries. These earthwork fortifications served as administrative centres and defensive strongholds during the early stages of the Norman colonisation of Ireland, often preceding the construction of more elaborate stone castles.
