Castle, Toomore, Co. Mayo

Built during the late medieval period, likely in the 15th or 16th century, the structure served as a fortified residence for a local Gaelic or Anglo-Norman family. The castle’s strategic location would have provided its inhabitants with control over the surrounding countryside whilst offering protection during the turbulent centuries when clan warfare and political upheaval were commonplace in the west of Ireland.

The castle exhibits typical features of Irish tower houses from this era, with thick limestone walls designed to withstand siege and assault. Though now in ruins, the remaining structure still reveals evidence of its former defensive capabilities, including narrow window openings that would have served as arrow slits, and the remnants of what was once a formidable entrance. The interior would have contained multiple floors connected by a spiral staircase built into the walls; a design that maximised living space whilst maintaining the building’s defensive integrity.

Today, the castle stands as a silent witness to centuries of Irish history, from the Gaelic lordships through the Cromwellian conquest and beyond. Like many such structures throughout Mayo, it fell into disuse following the social and political changes of the 17th century, when traditional clan systems gave way to new forms of governance and land ownership. Visitors to the site can still trace the outline of the original structure and imagine the lives of those who once called this formidable tower home, from the lords who commanded from its upper chambers to the servants who toiled in its lower levels.
