Marked on the 2nd and 3rd editions of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, this forgotten cemetery offers no visible traces of its former purpose today; no headstones peek through the undergrowth, no stone walls mark its boundaries. The site was documented as part of the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, a comprehensive catalogue of the county’s field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983.

The burial ground’s location in Baile Na Bó suggests it may have served as a children’s burial ground, known in Irish tradition as a cillín. These unconsecrated graveyards were typically established in remote corners of fields or on boundaries between townlands, serving as final resting places for unbaptised infants and others excluded from consecrated ground according to Catholic doctrine. Such sites are scattered throughout rural Ireland, often unmarked and unrecorded except in local memory or old maps.

Today, the Calluragh Burial Ground stands as a poignant reminder of Ireland’s complex religious and social history, where strict ecclesiastical rules determined not just how people lived, but where they could be buried. While nature has reclaimed the site and agricultural activity continues around it, the very absence of physical remains speaks volumes about the marginalised individuals who were laid to rest here, their memories preserved only through cartographic records and archaeological surveys.
