Children’s burial ground, Kyle, Co. Wicklow

On a north-facing slope in Kyle, County Wicklow, there is a graveyard with no church, no ruins of one, and no obvious explanation for why it exists where it does.

Its boundaries are clear enough, a rectangular enclosure roughly 35 metres east to west and 50 metres north to south, defined by an earth and stone bank still standing over a metre high in places. But the absence of any ecclesiastical structure sets it apart from the ordinary pattern of Irish rural burial, and points instead towards a quietly sorrowful tradition.

Sites like this are known in Ireland as cillíní, informal burial grounds used for those who, under Catholic teaching, could not be interred in consecrated ground. Unbaptised infants were the most common occupants, placed in marginal or liminal spaces, old ringforts, field boundaries, coastal strands, or unconsecrated enclosures like this one. Liam Price, writing in 1946, noted that there was no trace of any church at Kyle and suggested the site had served precisely this purpose. The graveyard appears by name on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1838, recorded as Kyle Grave Yard, which at least confirms it was a recognised feature of the local landscape nearly two centuries ago, even if its earlier history goes unrecorded. The substantial bank enclosing it, between two and two and a half metres wide, suggests the boundary was considered important, perhaps as a way of marking off this ground from the surrounding fields, even in the absence of formal religious sanction.
