First documented on the Ordnance Survey’s original 6-inch map from 1834-5, this prehistoric monument yielded remarkable finds when it was opened around 1830. Inside the cairn, excavators discovered a large stone cist containing a human skeleton accompanied by two small pottery vessels, artefacts that speak to burial customs dating back thousands of years.

The site caught the attention of numerous antiquarians and archaeologists throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, appearing in various surveys and catalogues of Irish megalithic monuments. From Fagan’s observations in the 1840s to its inclusion in Waddell’s comprehensive survey in 1990, the Druid’s Grave has maintained its significance as an important example of Bronze Age burial practice in Donegal. The presence of pottery vessels alongside the human remains suggests this was the grave of someone of considerable status within their community, as such grave goods were typically reserved for individuals of importance.

Today, the monument is officially recorded as number 44:5 in both the Sites and Monuments Record and the Record of Monuments and Places, ensuring its protection under Irish heritage law. While the romantic name ‘Druid’s Grave’ reflects 19th-century antiquarian imagination rather than any actual connection to druids, the cairn remains an authentic link to the prehistoric communities who once inhabited this corner of Donegal, carefully laying their dead to rest with ceremony and care that has preserved their memory for nearly 4,000 years.
