Cist, Sladran, Co. Donegal

In the farmyard at Sladran, County Donegal, lies a modest yet intriguing piece of Ireland's ancient past: a small stone-lined cist measuring just one metre by 0.72 metres and 0.63 metres deep.

When archaeologists first encountered this burial chamber, they found it sealed beneath a protective flagstone, preserving what would have been the final resting place of someone who lived thousands of years ago. These stone cists, typically dating from the Bronze Age, were carefully constructed burial sites where prehistoric communities laid their dead to rest, often accompanied by pottery vessels or personal items for the afterlife.

The cist’s compact dimensions and careful construction reflect the burial practices of Ireland’s early inhabitants, who invested considerable effort in creating these stone-lined graves despite their small size. Such burial chambers are scattered throughout Donegal and indeed across Ireland, offering glimpses into the rituals and beliefs of communities who farmed these lands long before written history began. The fact that this particular example survives in a working farmyard speaks to the remarkable continuity of land use in rural Ireland, where ancient monuments and modern agriculture have coexisted for generations.

This archaeological feature was documented as part of the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. The survey catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, creating an invaluable record of Donegal’s rich archaeological heritage. The National Museum of Ireland maintains records of such sites, ensuring that even modest monuments like the Sladran cist contribute to our understanding of Ireland’s prehistoric communities and their treatment of the dead.
