In 1640, Lord Gormanstown held 500 acres at Cloghreagh in County Meath, including what was already known as the 'old Brocken Castle'.

This intriguing ruin appears on the Down Survey parish map of Nobber from 1656-8, suggesting it held some local significance even in its diminished state. Today, visitors to the site on its low northwest to southeast ridge will find the eastern corner of what was likely a substantial square tower house, its walls still reaching about five metres skyward. The surviving southeast wall stretches six metres externally whilst the northeast wall extends just over five metres, both featuring rebates that once supported the first floor joists.

The tower house forms part of a larger defensive complex, sitting at the eastern angle of a rectangular bawn measuring roughly 30 by 23 metres. This protective enclosure is still defined by its original ditch or fosse, which varies between four and six metres wide and drops to depths of up to one metre, though an 18th century building now occupies where the southeastern section once stood. A north-south lane has cut through the western side of the tower house over the centuries, truncating the original structure.

Within the bawn’s protective embrace, just northeast of the tower, lie the grass-covered parallel foundations of what was once a house. These remnants measure about 9.4 metres from northeast to southwest and three metres across, offering a glimpse into the domestic arrangements that once accompanied this fortified residence. The entire complex paints a picture of a once-formidable defensive homestead that has watched over the Meath countryside for centuries, its stones bearing witness to the ebb and flow of Irish history from medieval times through to the present day.
