Country house, Ballynacourty, Co. Limerick

What stands at Ballynacourty in County Limerick today is a single-storey vernacular house, abandoned and quietly decaying, with a gable-ended slated roof and a central chimneystack.

It is an ordinary enough sight in the Irish countryside, except that it almost certainly replaced something more substantial. The gap between what was once recorded here and what now survives is the quietly puzzling thing about this spot.

The Ordnance Survey Name Books, compiled in the nineteenth century as part of Ireland's ambitious project to document and map the entire island, recorded Ballynacourtia House Lower as a rectangular building two storeys high and, at the time of recording, in good repair. The surveyors noted it had been built approximately 150 years before their visit, which would place its construction somewhere in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. That description, of a two-storey house in sound condition, makes the current structure something of a puzzle. What survives is of eighteenth or early nineteenth century vernacular appearance, meaning it follows the plain, functional building traditions of rural Ireland rather than any grander architectural ambition, and it is reduced to a single storey. Whether the original building was demolished, collapsed, or simply evolved over successive generations of use and alteration is not recorded.

The site sits in Ballynacourty, a townland in County Limerick, and the abandoned house is the principal feature of interest for anyone curious enough to seek it out. Vernacular buildings of this kind, modest and functional, are increasingly rare as they tend to be either renovated beyond recognition or left to fall entirely. This one occupies an intermediate state. Visitors approaching the area should bear in mind that this is not a managed heritage site; access and condition may vary, and the structure should be treated with appropriate caution. The record was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in August 2012, so some further deterioration since that date is likely.
