Cross-inscribed stone, Drumanure, Co. Clare

In the townland of Drumanure in County Clare, a stone bearing an incised cross has survived long enough to be recorded as a monument, though the details of its age, appearance, and precise location remain largely undocumented in publicly available sources.

Cross-inscribed stones are among the quieter survivals of early Christian activity in Ireland, stones on which a simple cross was carved, sometimes as a boundary marker for sacred land, sometimes as a devotional act, sometimes to Christianise a site with older associations. They can be easy to overlook, asking none of the attention that a round tower or a carved high cross demands, yet they often predate the more elaborate stonework by centuries.
