In the rough pastures on the northern slopes of the Glencolumbkille valley sits Garrai an Turas, literally 'the pilgrimage field', a remarkable stone enclosure that speaks to centuries of devotional practice in County Donegal.

The six-sided walled structure, likely rectangular before a southern extension was added, stretches nearly 20 metres east to west and 16 metres at its widest point. Its weathered walls create a sacred boundary around what was once an important stop on local pilgrimage routes.

Within this ancient enclosure stand three substantial penitential cairns, each topped with stone slabs that bear witness to religious observance. The first cairn forms a distinctive horseshoe shape, measuring almost four metres across and standing nearly one and a half metres tall. At its heart lies a stone slab carved with two simple crosses on its northwestern face; understated markers of faith worn smooth by time and weather. The second cairn, similarly sized and crowned with a smaller slab, displays something rather unusual: geometric patterns of grooved rectangular divisions running along its edges, suggesting either decorative intent or perhaps some symbolic meaning now lost to us.

The third and largest cairn stretches nearly five metres in length, topped with an uninscribed slab that some observers suggest has a naturally cross-like profile when viewed from certain angles. These stone monuments, built up over generations by pilgrims adding stones as acts of penance or prayer, transform this hillside ledge into a tangible record of religious devotion. The site offers a glimpse into the deeply rooted tradition of turas, or pilgrimage rounds, that once drew the faithful to remote locations across Ireland’s western counties.
