Still in use today after a recent extension, this atmospheric burial ground sits on the southeastern slopes of Glendoon Hill, overlooking the River Swilly. The graveyard contains the ruins of an ancient church, a holy well, and a remarkable collection of carved stone monuments that speak to centuries of continuous religious significance.

The site underwent significant tidying around 1968, during which a grassy rectangular mound perpendicular to the church’s south wall was transformed into a distinctive stone cairn. This flat-topped structure now serves as an open-air display for the graveyard’s impressive collection of medieval graveslabs. Among these are six upright slabs featuring cruciform designs, one depicting a human figure, and three plain examples. The cairn itself incorporates eight cross-slabs; five lying loose on top and three set directly into the structure. Twelve additional graveslabs rest on the cairn, ranging from plain, uninscribed stones to trapezoidal examples and one dating from the late 19th century.

Perhaps the most intriguing artifact is a subrectangular slab positioned at the cairn’s eastern edge, measuring just over a metre in length. Its surface displays two panels of intricate design: the upper panel features a swastika motif with arms ending in square spirals, whilst the lower panel showcases a spiral design with a trumpet terminal, accompanied by a T-shaped pattern with square terminals. These geometric patterns, flanked by blank panels, represent the sophisticated artistic traditions of early medieval Ireland and demonstrate the site’s importance as a centre of religious and cultural activity throughout the centuries.
