This is a belvedere, a structure built not for shelter or defence but for the pleasure of a view, and it survives in a field that has long since returned to tillage, its original landscape setting largely gone. What remains is quietly odd: a stone tower barely three metres across, raised up on a tree-covered earthen and stone mound about four metres high, as if the builders were not quite satisfied with the natural horizon and decided to manufacture a better one.

The structure itself is built in random-rubble limestone with a slight base batter, meaning the walls angle very gently inward from the base, a technique that gives a wall extra stability and was common in vernacular and estate construction alike. The interior walls were plastered, and the ground floor inside is slightly raised. Four large openings, each roughly 1.1 metres wide, face the cardinal points of the compass, east, south, west and north, with the eastern ope most likely serving as the door. That arrangement of openings suggests the whole point was panoramic: whoever stood inside could turn and take in views in every direction, framed by those generous gaps in the wall. The tower sits within the demesne of Ballyclogh Castle, and would have formed part of a deliberately arranged designed landscape, the kind of ornamental estate planning fashionable among landowning families from the eighteenth century onward, where follies, eye-catchers, and viewing platforms were placed to create picturesque effects across managed grounds.
