Earthwork, Caherlissakill, Co. Galway

In the undulating grassland of Caherlissakill, in County Galway, a low grassed-over platform sits in a field and refuses to declare what it once was.

That ambiguity is part of what makes it interesting. Roughly subcircular in plan, measuring about 45 metres from north to south and rising only 0.7 metres above the surrounding ground, it is the kind of earthwork that rewards patient looking rather than a quick glance.

The platform is defined along most of its perimeter by a scarp, a sharp edge or slope in the ground surface, though the northern and north-western sections have been quarried away at some point, removing whatever evidence once existed there. On the western side, faint traces of an external fosse, that is a ditch running around the outside of the feature, can still be made out. Stretches of possible stone-facing are visible on the scarp to the south and west, suggesting that the structure was once revetted, meaning its earthen edges were stabilised with stone. The interior is steeply uneven and studded with protruding stone, and a further curiosity sits within the southern half: an oval hollow roughly 22 metres long and 11 metres wide, enclosed by its own low bank. What to make of all this is genuinely unresolved. The earthwork may be a partially levelled ringfort, the circular enclosed farmsteads that were built across Ireland from the early medieval period roughly from the sixth to the tenth centuries, though they continued in use beyond that. Alternatively, the dimensions, the revetment, and that interior hollow could point towards a low mound of a rather different character, perhaps a burial or assembly site. The archaeology has not settled the question.
