Ecclesiastical enclosure, Moor, Co. Galway

A large limestone boulder sitting along the southern boundary of an ancient enclosure in County Galway is, by local reckoning, a remedy for sore eyes.

That detail alone sets this place apart from the general run of early ecclesiastical sites. The boulder stands on the line of what was once a continuous enclosing element, now largely reduced to a scarp across much of its circuit, with a denuded earthen bank surviving only at the north-east and south-east. The overall shape is subcircular, measuring roughly 120 metres on its north-west to south-east axis and 116 metres on the other, which is a fairly typical footprint for an early Irish ecclesiastical enclosure. Such enclosures, usually circular or oval in plan, defined the sacred and functional territory of an early church settlement, separating the religious community from the surrounding landscape.

Within the interior sits a rectilinear graveyard, its stone boundary wall given an unusual finishing touch: small crenellated turrets at the north-east and south-east corners. Crenellations on a graveyard wall are an uncommon detail, more decorative than defensive, and suggest that whoever rebuilt or formalized this enclosure had a particular interest in its appearance. A church stands inside the graveyard. To the south-east, just outside it, is a well, which according to local tradition once supplied water to an entire village that occupied the surrounding ground. No trace of that village is described above ground now, and field walls of a much later date cut across the monument at the west and north, compressing the older landscape beneath the more recent one. An external fosse, a ditch running outside the main enclosure, survives at the north-east and west, and a gap in the western circuit may represent an original entrance rather than later damage.
