Tucked away in County Donegal, Clonleigh graveyard sits on a low drumlin hill surrounded by what was once marshy floodplain near where the Rivers Deele and Foyle meet.

This peaceful cemetery is believed to mark the site of an early ecclesiastical settlement dating back to the 6th century, making it one of those quietly significant places that dot the Irish countryside. Today, the graveyard still contains the weathered remains of a medieval church, though only fragments of its north and south walls survive to hint at its former grandeur.

The church ruins tell their own story through the stones. The north wall, built from rubble, stands 6.1 metres long and rises to 4.15 metres high, whilst the opposing south wall stretches 4.75 metres and reaches 4.5 metres in height; now incorporated into the graveyard boundary itself. Both walls feature blocked up windows with distinctive segmental arches, and if you look closely at the south wall’s window, you can still spot traces of the original wicker centering used during construction on the arch’s underside. The church’s interior width of 6.8 metres suggests this was once a substantial building, though no trace remains of the east or west gables that would have completed the structure.

Recent conservation work by Donegal County Council has uncovered some remarkable medieval treasures partially buried in the soil near the church ruins. Three fragments of carved medieval mouldings have emerged, along with an impressive recumbent slab measuring 1.68 metres long. This tapered stone slab bears a deeply carved Maltese cross, 32 centimetres square, with a raised central boss 9 centimetres across; a beautiful example of medieval stone carving that had lain hidden for centuries. These discoveries, located on the eastern side of the graveyard, add another layer to our understanding of this ancient site’s long religious significance.
