Enclosures
Beneath a stretch of ordinary pasture at Carrowmore in County Mayo, there may once have stood a ringfort, one of the thousands of circular enclosed settlements that dot the Irish countryside and date broadly to the early medieval period.
A ringfort typically consisted of a raised earthen bank enclosing a farmstead, the home of a single family or small community, and they were once so common across Ireland that they became embedded in the landscape as landmarks, field boundaries, and focal points of local memory. This particular example has left none of that presence behind. It is, by any measure, a site defined by its absence.
