Enclosure, Cavan, Co. Mayo

In the undulating pasture outside the townland of Cavan in County Mayo, a site exists almost entirely in the negative.

It is marked on every edition of the Ordnance Survey map as a circular enclosure roughly 42 metres in diameter, and local tradition holds that it was once a ringfort. A ringfort, to give a sense of the thing, is an early medieval farmstead enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, built to define and defend a family's domestic space. But this one has been levelled completely. There are no visible surface traces left at all.

What makes this particular site quietly compelling is precisely that gap between the cartographic record and the ground. Generations of surveyors evidently found enough to mark it, and local memory preserved the identification as a ringfort, yet the physical enclosure itself has been absorbed entirely into the working farmland around it. An estimated maximum diameter of around 42 metres is consistent with a mid-sized ringfort, the kind that would have enclosed a family dwelling along with outbuildings and perhaps a small yard. The site appears in a 1994 archaeological survey of the Ballinrobe district compiled by D. Lavelle for the Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association, which catalogued sites across a landscape that still holds traces, however faint, of continuous human settlement.

There is little here for a visitor to see in any conventional sense. The value, if anything, lies in the reminder that the map and the field do not always agree, and that absence of visible remains is not the same as absence of history.
