A satellite image captured in July 2021 reveals a faint cropmark tracing the outline of a roughly circular enclosure, around 48 metres at its widest point. The mark appears intermittently, betraying the presence of a fosse, a rock-cut or earthen ditch, running beneath the surface. At four to five metres wide, this was no modest boundary feature.

Cropmarks form when buried features alter the moisture and nutrient content of the soil above them, causing the vegetation overhead to grow differently, sometimes taller and greener over a filled ditch, sometimes paler and thinner where foundations compress the ground. In dry summers especially, these differences become visible from altitude when they remain entirely hidden at ground level. The enclosure at Coolafancy belongs to a broad class of circular earthwork found across Ireland, sites that might once have served as ringforts, the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, or as enclosures of still earlier date. The width of the fosse here is notable; domestic ringfort ditches tend toward the modest, and a feature four to five metres across suggests the enclosure may have carried some significance beyond simple agricultural use, though the evidence is limited to what the crop itself has chosen to reveal.
