Enclosure, Garranekeevan, Co. Limerick

In a field in County Limerick, a slight change in the ground is all that announces something older beneath the grass.

What looks at first like a natural rise in the pasture turns out, on closer inspection, to be the ghost of a roughly D-shaped enclosure, its edges worn to little more than a low scarped lip. These kinds of earthwork enclosures are found across Ireland, typically the remains of early medieval settlements or farmsteads, where a raised or embanked boundary once defined a domestic or agricultural space. Here, that boundary is barely holding on.

The enclosure at Garranekeevan sits immediately south of a stream, on level ground, and measures approximately 21 metres north to south and just over 22 metres east to west. A scarp, which is a short, sharp slope cut into the earth rather than built up from it, defines the perimeter. It survives to a height of around 0.45 metres and a width of roughly 2.65 metres, which makes it a modest feature by any measure. The northeastern to southern arc of the boundary is the most legible, where the scarp runs in a noticeably straight line. Heading southwest, however, the edge becomes very indistinct, fading into the surrounding pasture and requiring some patience to trace. The interior is level throughout. The site was recorded and compiled by Denis Power, with notes uploaded in August 2011.

The enclosure lies entirely under pasture, which means the ground is undisturbed in the agricultural sense but also that there is nothing to see beyond the earthwork itself. Visitors should expect a subtle landscape feature rather than an obvious monument. The straightening of the scarp along the northeastern side is perhaps the most useful thing to look for when orientating yourself on the ground, as it gives the clearest indication of the enclosure's extent. The proximity of the stream to the north is worth noting, since early enclosures were frequently sited with access to water in mind. The site rewards a slow, deliberate walk around its perimeter rather than a quick glance from a gateway.
