On the northeastern slopes of Glengesh Hill in County Donegal, a substantial stone enclosure sprawls across the barren landscape, its weathered walls telling a story of centuries past.

Measuring approximately 61.6 metres from north to south and 57.2 metres from east to west, this irregularly shaped structure sits on a natural shoulder of land surrounded by rocky, boggy terrain. The enclosure’s most intriguing feature is that it straddles two townlands; Killasteever and Sceadamán, with a boundary wall running right through its centre, effectively dividing what was once a unified space.

The stone walls, which once stood proud and purposeful, now reach heights of up to 1.4 metres in their best preserved sections, though much of the structure has succumbed to time and human intervention. Local farmers and builders have, over the generations, repurposed many of the original stones for field boundaries and other constructions, leaving gaps and collapsed sections throughout. Inside the enclosure, the ground undulates dramatically, with the terrain rising generally towards the centre and featuring several notable changes in elevation that hint at possible internal divisions or structures that once existed within.

This archaeological site was documented as part of the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, conducted by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. Their work catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, preserving vital information about sites like this enclosure that might otherwise be lost to memory. While its exact purpose remains uncertain, whether it served as a defensive structure, a livestock enclosure, or held some ceremonial significance, it stands as a tangible link to the people who once inhabited these remote hills of Donegal.
