Enclosure, Killeen, Co. Kilkenny

In a field in Killeen, Co. Kilkenny, a circular patch of waterlogged ground is all that remains of what was once a substantial enclosure.

It does not announce itself. There is no earthwork to trace with your eye, no visible bank or ditch, only a slightly boggy depression that satellite imagery picks out as a dark smear against the surrounding farmland. What makes this quietly interesting is not what survives but what the old maps reveal about what has been lost.

The first Ordnance Survey mapping of the area, completed in 1839, recorded the enclosure as a D-shaped structure, roughly 41 metres north to south along its straight eastern side and about 23 metres east to west. A D-shaped enclosure, with one straight edge and one curved, is a form recognised across early medieval Ireland, often interpreted as a ringfort variant adapted to local topography or function; ringforts were typically enclosed farmsteads, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches. By the time the OS revisited the site for its 1900 revision, the cartographers drew it as a circular area of around 36 metres in diameter, suggesting either that the distinctive straight edge had already begun to erode or that surveyors were interpreting a degraded monument differently. A stream running north to south along the eastern edge may help explain the original D-shape, with that straight side following the natural boundary of the watercourse. At some point between 1900 and the present, the monument was levelled entirely, most likely through agricultural improvement. Two further enclosures survive in the surrounding landscape, one approximately 135 metres to the east and another around 300 metres to the northeast, hinting that this part of Kilkenny was once a more densely settled early historic landscape than the empty fields now suggest.
