Enclosure, Kilskeagh, Co. Galway

There is something quietly unsettling about a place that exists primarily on paper.

On a north-east-facing slope in the grasslands of Kilskeagh in County Galway, an enclosure roughly 45 metres across was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps, those meticulous nineteenth-century surveys that captured field boundaries, ruins, and earthworks before many were lost to agriculture and development. Today, no visible surface trace survives. The ground offers nothing to the eye.

An enclosure, in the archaeological sense, is simply a defined area enclosed by a bank, ditch, or wall, and such features are among the most common monument types in the Irish landscape. They served many purposes across prehistory and the early medieval period, from settlement to livestock management to ritual use, and their subcircular form at Kilskeagh, measuring approximately 45 metres on its longer north-west to south-east axis and around 35 metres across, places it within a familiar range of sizes for early settlement enclosures. What makes the Kilskeagh site worth a second thought is its relationship to another enclosure recorded roughly 200 metres to the south-west, this one sited on a hilltop. That proximity, with one enclosure commanding elevated ground and another positioned lower on the slope, suggests the two may have functioned in some connected way, though whether as contemporaneous settlements, as a farmstead with an associated stock enclosure, or simply as unrelated features from different periods, the surviving evidence cannot say. The slope-sited enclosure has been absorbed entirely into the surrounding grassland, its banks levelled by centuries of farming, leaving the OS maps as its only real monument.
