Enclosures
In the townland of Kilvine in County Mayo, an ancient enclosure sits quietly in the landscape, recorded as a monument but not yet accompanied by any publicly available detail about what it is, when it was made, or who made it.
That gap is itself telling. Enclosures of this kind are among the most common and most varied archaeological features in rural Ireland, ranging from the circular ditched platforms of early medieval raths, which served as defended farmsteads, to earlier prehistoric boundaries whose purposes remain disputed. Without further documentation, this particular example holds its secrets.
