This subcircular earthwork, measuring roughly 32 metres east to west and 26.5 metres north to south, follows the natural contours of the hilltop whilst offering commanding views westward over the bay. The enclosing scarp varies in character around its perimeter; along the southern and western edges where the knoll drops away steeply, it rises between half a metre and 80 centimetres, whilst traces of a stony rim along the northwestern section suggest the remnants of an old wall.

The site’s history proves rather elusive. Within the enclosure, the wall footings of a rectangular two-roomed house, measuring approximately 18 to 19 metres in length and 5 to 6 metres wide, partially obscure the northeastern section of the scarp. This vernacular-style dwelling doesn’t appear on either the 1836 or 1907 Ordnance Survey maps, suggesting it may have been built and abandoned within a relatively narrow timeframe. The eastern and southeastern portions of the enclosure are now tangled in brambles where a later field fence marks the modern property boundary.

Archaeological interpretation remains open to debate. When viewed from above, the enclosure’s size, shape and hillfort positioning might suggest it’s a ringfort, one of Ireland’s most common early medieval settlement types. However, it’s equally possible that the entire complex, including both the enclosure and the house, represents a later vernacular settlement that simply took advantage of the knoll’s naturally defensive position. Without excavation, this limestone hilltop keeps its secrets, watched over to the south by the imposing presence of Lurgan Hill.
