On a hilltop overlooking the Foyle valley in Saintjohnstown, County Donegal, there once stood a single-ringed enclosure that has since vanished without a trace.
Enclosure, Saintjohnstown (St. Johnstown Ed), Co. Donegal
Marked on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, this ringfort has left no physical remains above ground, making it one of those tantalising archaeological mysteries where we must rely entirely on historical records to understand what once existed here.
What makes this site particularly intriguing is the discovery of a souterrain nearby, though apparently outside the ringfort’s original boundaries. This underground passage, found at about four feet deep, featured an impressive flagstone roof with each stone measuring roughly two yards across. These souterrains, common throughout Ireland, were typically used for storage or as hiding places during times of conflict. Unfortunately, after its discovery, the passage was filled in, removing another piece of the archaeological puzzle.
The site represents a common challenge in Irish archaeology; many ancient structures recorded in the 19th and early 20th centuries have since been lost to agricultural improvements, development, or simple neglect. The information we have comes from the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled in 1983, which gathered together centuries of observations and records to preserve knowledge of sites that might otherwise be completely forgotten.
