Enclosure, Scarteen, Co. Cork

On a steep south-westerly slope in Scarteen, County Cork, a low grassy rise in the pasture marks what was once a circular enclosure, roughly twenty metres across.

It is the kind of feature that most walkers would step over without a second thought, yet its quiet geometry, a slightly oval platform measuring approximately twenty-three metres north-west to south-east and twenty metres north-east to south-west, has been holding its shape in the landscape for a very long time. A 1936 Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded it as a hachured circular raised area, the conventional cartographic shorthand for a low earthwork, and the ground still largely matches that depiction.

The enclosure is defined by a low bank running from west around to south-west, with a modern field boundary continuing the line further west. To the north-east and south-east, a slight external depression may represent the remnant of a fosse, the ditch that would originally have accompanied the bank, and a second low rise to the north-east hints at a possible outer bank, giving the site at least two phases or layers of construction. What makes the place particularly telling is the material incorporated into the southern side of the enclosure: burnt mound debris from a nearby fulacht fiadh. A fulacht fiadh is a type of prehistoric cooking site, typically identified by a mound of fire-cracked stones and charcoal left over from repeatedly heating water in a trough. The presence of this material built into the enclosure's fabric suggests that whoever constructed or modified the bank was either reusing an already ancient monument nearby or cannibalising its spoil, a small detail that quietly compresses several layers of human activity into a single earthen edge.
