Field system, Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry

On the north-facing slopes of Bentee, above the town of Cahersiveen and looking out towards Valencia Harbour, a set of ancient field boundaries lies half-swallowed by heather and gorse.

The walls protrude only slightly above the surrounding shallow bog, their presence easy to overlook, yet what they outline is a rectangular area roughly 110 metres by 70 metres, the ghost of a managed agricultural landscape that once organised life on this hillside.

The walls themselves are built from both boulder and slab-type stones, reaching up to 0.8 metres in height where they survive, and running in both linear and curvilinear alignments. That mix of straight and curved boundaries is fairly typical of early field systems in Ireland, where divisions often followed the natural contours of the land rather than any rigid geometric plan. The whole arrangement is largely obscured by overgrowth, which is precisely why it has attracted relatively little attention compared to more visible monuments on the Iveragh Peninsula. In the north-western portion of the field system, a hut site survives alongside the walls, suggesting that whoever worked these enclosures also lived close by. The site is recorded in O'Sullivan and Sheehan's 1996 survey of south-west Kerry, which catalogued it among the many overlooked field monuments scattered across the region's uplands.

The bog that now covers much of this hillside has acted as both a preserving medium and a disguise. Blanket and shallow bog frequently accumulates over abandoned agricultural land in the west of Ireland, sealing earlier surfaces beneath a layer of peat and vegetation. Here it has kept the wall remains intact enough to study while making them genuinely difficult to read from any distance, which gives the site a quality common to Ireland's upland archaeology: the landscape looks empty until you are standing in it.
