Forge, Gowran, Co. Kilkenny

At the eastern end of Gowran, on the north side of Main Street, stands a historic site formerly known as 'The Forge'.

This building appears on White's map of Gowran from 1710/11, though it likely dates back at least to the 17th century. Today, a two-storey four-bay house with three chimneys occupies this historically significant location.

The presence of a forge in this position reflects Gowran's importance as a settlement in early modern Ireland. Blacksmiths were essential tradespeople in pre-industrial communities, crafting and repairing tools, agricultural implements, household items and parts for transport vehicles. Their workshops were typically positioned in accessible locations within towns, as this one was on Gowran's Main Street.

While the original forge building has been replaced by a residential structure, its location preserved on early 18th century cartography provides valuable insight into Gowran's historical layout and economic activities. This site represents the continuity of occupation in Irish towns, where the same plots often remained in use for centuries despite changes to the buildings themselves.
