Fulacht fia, Cullenagh (Owneybeg By.), Co. Limerick

A low, unassuming mound in a County Limerick field holds evidence of a cooking method that was already ancient by the time the Normans arrived in Ireland.

This is a fulacht fia, a class of prehistoric burnt mound site found in considerable numbers across the Irish landscape, and one that sits quietly in poorly-drained pasture in the townland of Cullenagh, in the barony of Owneybeg. The site is modest by any measure, roughly thirteen metres along its northwest to southeast axis and rising only about half a metre from the surrounding ground, but what it contains is the real point of interest: a dense accumulation of fire-cracked stone, the characteristic signature of this monument type.

Fulachtaí fia, to use the plural, are generally understood to be the remains of outdoor cooking places used during the Bronze Age, though some examples may be later. The typical method involved heating stones in a fire, then dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring the liquid to a boil; the repeated thermal shock eventually shattered the stones, and the discarded fragments built up over time into the horseshoe-shaped or oval mounds that survive today. The location of this particular example follows a pattern well recognised in the archaeological record: proximity to a water source, in this case a stream immediately to the east of the mound, and a south-facing slope that would have offered some shelter and warmth. The site was compiled as part of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland by Denis Power, with records uploaded in July 2013. By that point, the notes observe, the monument had already been partially levelled, a reminder that even low-profile earthworks are vulnerable to agricultural disturbance.

The site lies in pasture, so access will depend on the landowner, and there is no formal visitor infrastructure. The mound itself is subtle enough that it could easily be overlooked without prior knowledge of its location; the fire-cracked stone within it is the clearest visual indicator of what you are looking at. The views from the slope extend to the east, south, and west, and the poorly-drained ground around the monument means the area can be wet underfoot, particularly outside the summer months. Anyone with a serious interest in visiting should consult the National Monuments Service record beforehand to confirm the precise location and check the current condition of the site.
