Fulacht fia, Lisballyhay, Co. Cork

On a south-west-facing slope in the pastureland of Lisballyhay in north Cork, a low oval mound sits roughly forty metres from a stream.

It is not especially dramatic to look at, measuring just under fourteen metres east to west and a little over eleven metres north to south, rising to about a metre in height. At its centre is a depression, and its top has been partially worn away over time. What makes it quietly remarkable is what it represents: a fulacht fia, one of the most common yet least understood monument types in the Irish landscape. These are the scorched and waterlogged remains of ancient cooking sites, where stones were heated in fire and then dropped into a water-filled trough to bring it to a boil. The burnt and shattered stones, discarded after use, accumulated over repeated firings into the characteristic horseshoe-shaped or oval mounds that survive today in their thousands across Ireland.

Fulachta fiadh are found throughout the country, typically near water sources, which is precisely what we see here, with the stream close by providing the essential ingredient. They date most commonly to the Bronze Age, though some sites span a wider period of use. The Lisballyhay example is not an isolated feature in the landscape; it belongs to a cluster of four such monuments in the immediate area, a grouping that suggests sustained or repeated activity in this part of north Cork over what may have been a considerable stretch of time. Whether this location was chosen for its proximity to water, the slope's aspect, or some other practical reason, the concentration of four sites so close together gives a sense of a place that was returned to, perhaps seasonally, by communities for whom this method of cooking or processing was routine and well-organised.
