Fulacht fia, Toberburr, Co. Dublin

Somewhere on the greens of St Margaret Golf Club in north County Dublin, golfers line up their shots at the 11th tee without necessarily giving much thought to the ancient cooking site built into the ground beneath their feet.

The mound in question is a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric burnt mound associated with outdoor cooking or food preparation, typically constructed beside a water source. They are found in their thousands across Ireland, but this one is unusual for the sheer scale of its survival and the unlikely company it now keeps.

The mound is crescent-shaped, measuring 27 metres wide and rising to 4 metres in height, making it a substantial example of its type. It faces east, down towards a stream that runs as a tributary of the Ward River, which would have been central to its original function; fulachta fia work by heating stones in a fire and dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to a boil, leaving behind a characteristic horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-cracked stone and dark, charred soil. The site was noted by Healy in 1975, and at that point it had already been partially absorbed into the golf course, with mature tree planting along its western and northern edges reinforcing its incorporation into the designed landscape around the 11th tee.

Access to the site is, practically speaking, through the golf club itself, which means visiting during club hours and with appropriate awareness of play on the course. The mound is visible from the tee area, and the crescent shape, while partly obscured by the established trees along its edges, remains legible if you know what you are looking at. The proximity to the stream gives a useful sense of why the spot was chosen in the first place; the landscape logic of a Bronze Age cooking site and a modern fairway are not as different as they might seem, both requiring flat, manageable ground beside moving water.
