Gate lodge, Kilcloony, Co. Galway

Gate lodges occupy a curious place in the Irish rural landscape.

Small, often ornate, and built to signal the wealth and taste of whoever lay at the end of the avenue, they were the first architectural statement a visitor would encounter on approaching a country house. The example at Kilcloony in County Galway belongs to this tradition, a modest structure whose presence marks the former boundary between the public road and a private demesne.
