Graveslab, Tobertown, Co. Dublin

A graveslab fragment recorded in a County Dublin graveyard has since vanished, and that quiet disappearance is perhaps the most interesting thing about it.

When archaeologists documented the site in 1992, they found a narrow slab of worked stone at the southern end of the burial ground at Tobertown, oriented roughly northwest to southeast. It measured just 0.8 metres in height, 0.15 metres wide, and 0.06 metres thick, a modest fragment by any measure. Yet once a year, on the 15th of August, it became the focus of a Pattern day, a traditional Irish celebration tied to a local saint or holy site, often coinciding with the feast of the Assumption. On that day, wooden crosses were placed on the slab, a gesture of veneration that suggests the stone carried far more meaning to the local community than its dimensions alone would imply.

The record was compiled by Geraldine Stout and forms part of the broader archaeological inventory for County Dublin, catalogued under the reference DU001-003001-. Beyond its dimensions and orientation, the notes offer little by way of origin or age, and the slab is described simply as a fragment, suggesting it was already incomplete when recorded. The Pattern day custom itself points to deep roots; such gatherings were widespread across Ireland until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the Catholic Church moved to suppress many of them, though practices persisted quietly in rural areas well into the twentieth century and occasionally beyond. That this one was still active enough to be noted in 1992 is worth pausing over.

On visits made after 1992, the graveslab could not be located. Whether it was moved, buried beneath shifting ground, or simply overlooked is not recorded. The graveyard at Tobertown remains, and the site is catalogued within the national monuments database, but the stone itself appears to have slipped away without explanation. Anyone visiting should be aware they are looking for the absence of something as much as the thing itself, a place where a modest fragment once gathered people together each August, and where that gathering has now left no visible trace.
