Graveyard, Carn, Pettigo, Co. Donegal

In the quiet countryside near Pettigoe in County Donegal, the remnants of a forgotten church tell a story of centuries past.

Though marked as a ‘church in ruins’ on 19th century Ordnance Survey maps, today not a single stone of the building remains visible above ground. The surrounding graveyard, however, still bears witness to its existence through several grass-covered mounds that hint at the foundations beneath. When the antiquarian O’Connor visited in 1879, enough of the structure survived for him to record its impressive dimensions: 66 feet long and 22 feet wide, with evidence suggesting it had been built in the late 1400s.

Standing sentinel amongst the burial mounds is a weathered ringed cross, carved from stone and measuring just over three quarters of a metre tall. This isn’t just any cross; according to O’Connor’s account, this ancient Celtic monument was actually relocated here from Saints Island in Lough Derg, presumably when that holy site fell into disuse. The cross, with its distinctive ring connecting the arms, represents a tangible link to Ireland’s early Christian heritage and the medieval pilgrimage traditions that once flourished in this region.

The site’s significance extends beyond its physical remains. An old roadway passes nearby, once trodden by countless pilgrims making their way to the sacred sites of Lough Derg. This wasn’t merely a local church serving its parish; it was a waypoint on one of Ireland’s most important religious routes, offering rest and prayer to medieval travellers seeking spiritual redemption at St Patrick’s Purgatory. Today, whilst the church has returned to earth and the pilgrims no longer pass, the ringed cross continues its silent vigil, a solitary reminder of the faith and devotion that once animated this now tranquil corner of Donegal.
